\nMinistry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), had organised the National Tribal Health Conclave 2025, on 20th January 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This landmark event is a pivotal initiative under the DhartiAabaJanjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, aimed at addressing the critical health and well-being challenges faced by India\u2019s tribal communities.<\/p>\n
Following the conclave, a National Level Training of Trainers (ToT) program on awareness generation and counseling for Sickle Cell Anaemia was conducted on January 21\u201322, 2025, at Kaushal Bhawan, New Delhi, as part of efforts to eliminate the disease by 2047.<\/p>\n
India\u2019s tribal communities often face unique healthcare challenges due to geographical isolation, socio-economic vulnerabilities, and deeply rooted cultural traditions. These factors contribute to significant disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, requiring specialized attention and solutions.<\/p>\n
In response to these challenges, the Government of India has undertaken several transformative steps. Among these is the launch of the National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi targeting the eradication of sickle cell anaemia by 2047. Complementing this mission, the MoTA has introduced several initiatives under the DhartiAabaJanjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan to ensure holistic health and well-being in tribal regions.<\/p>\n
Key Efforts and Initiatives in Tribal Healthcare:<\/p>\n
The MoTA, in collaboration with MoH&FW, AIIMS, and other stakeholders, has launched several initiatives:<\/p>\n
Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chair of Tribal Health and Haematology: Established at AIIMS Delhi, this chair serves as a multi-disciplinary platform for research and data collection on tribal health.
\nCentres of Competence (CoC): 15 CoCs have been sanctioned in 14 states to enable advanced and prenatal diagnosis of sickle cell anemia, a prevalent genetic condition in tribal populations.
\nCollaborative Approach: The MoTA is working closely with MoH&FW, MoAYUSH, MoWCD, NHM, AIIMSs, CoCs, ICMR, UN agencies, NGOs, and state tribal welfare departments to ensure effective healthcare delivery.<\/p>\n
The National Tribal Health Conclave 2025 brought together key stakeholders, including officials from the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Women and Child Development, AYUSH, Social Justice and Empowerment, senior state government officials, NHM representatives, AIIMS directors, tribal health experts, premier institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, and more. The event has focused on identifying priority areas for policy intervention, action-oriented research, and course-correction initiatives to strengthen the tribal healthcare system.<\/p>\n
Objectives of the Conclave:<\/p>\n
Facilitate discussions to explore innovative healthcare delivery models for tribal regions.
\nIdentify priority areas for policy interventions and research.
\nDevelop culturally appropriate health strategies to enhance health-seeking behavior.
\nStrengthen healthcare systems through capacity building, community engagement, and monitoring mechanisms.
\nCreate a comprehensive action plan to improve healthcare access and outcomes in tribal areas.<\/p>\n
Inaugural Session Highlights:<\/p>\n
The conclave was inaugurated by Shri JualOram, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, with the presence of MoS (TA) Shri DurgadasUikey, Secretary of Tribal Affairs Shri Vibhu Nayar, and Director of AIIMS Delhi Prof(Dr) M Srinivas.<\/p>\n
More than 400 participants from across the country attended the conclave, including Director of AIIMS Nagpur Prof (Dr)Prasant P Joshi; Director of AIIMS Deogarh& AIIMS Patna Prof (Dr) SaurabhVarshney;Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar Prof (Dr)Ashutosh Biswas; Director of AIIMS Guwahati Prof (Col) Ashok Puranik;Director of AIIMS Kalyani Prof (Dr)Ramjii, and Shri T RoumuanPaite, Joint Secretary, MoTA.<\/p>\n
Letters of Intent were exchanged between MoTA and AIIMS Delhi for adopting a tribal block in Odisha to conduct an etiological study, undertake field research on health conditions, and execute capacity-building programs.<\/p>\n

National-Level Training of Trainers on Sickle Cell Awareness and Counselling Held at KaushalBhawan, New Delhi<\/p>\n
As part of the Government of India’s commitment to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047 under the National Mission to Eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia, the MoTA organized a National-Level Training Programme on Awareness Generation and Counselling for doctors and healthcare professionals. The event was held on 21stand 22ndJanuary 2025 at KaushalBhawan, New Delhi, in collaboration with the BhagwanBirsa Munda Chair of Tribal Health and Hematology at AIIMS Delhi.<\/p>\n
