Voice Restored to Sushil Munda After Successful Laryngeal Cancer Surgery at Raigarh Medical College

Shri Lakhiram Agrawal Smriti Government Medical College, affiliated with Sant Baba Guru Ghasidas Ji Smriti Government Hospital, Raigarh, is constantly striving to improve its facilities and provide better healthcare to patients. In this series, a successful operation was performed on 33-year-old Sushil Munda, a resident of Jashpur, by the Ear, Nose, and Throat department under the guidance of Dean Dr. Vineet Jain and Hospital Superintendent Dr. Manoj Kumar Minj.
It is noteworthy that this was a critical situation for 33-year-old patient Sushil Munda, a resident of Jashpur. He had been suffering from a cough for the past two years and had lost his voice completely for the past six months. After treatment at several places, he came to Raigarh Medical College in despair. Various tests in the ENT department revealed that he was suffering from laryngeal cancer. The treatment for which is expensive and is done in big cities, but the specialist surgeons of the ENT department assured him that the treatment is possible at the medical college and the specialist surgeon explained the various treatment procedures in detail. After the patient’s consent, various departments worked together to prepare for the surgery. The ENT department’s surgical team, including department head Dr. Jaya Sahu, Dr. Dinesh Patel Associate Professor, Dr. Neelam Nayak Assistant Professor, Dr. Ayushi Singh, Dr. Anil Kumari, Dr. Swati Pawar, Dr. Ramesh Patel, Dr. Bhavesh Sahu, Dr. Khushboo Patel, and the anesthesia department team headed by department head Dr. A.M. Lakra, successfully performed the complex operation with the special cooperation of Dr. Jitendra Nayak, Associate Professor of the Medicine Department.
After the surgery, the patient was kept in the ICU under the doctor’s supervision for a few days where, after the care of the anesthesia department, medicine department, dietician, and nurses, the patient is now completely healthy and has been discharged.
What is TLPP and the treatment process?
Dr. Dinesh Patel, a specialist surgeon and associate professor of ENT, said that the name of this operation is TLPP (Total Laryngectomy Partial Pharyngectomy). In this, the entire voice box, windpipe, and upper part of the food pipe are removed, and then the food pipe and windpipe are recreated. The patient has to be kept in the ICU for a few days. Where a nutritious controlled diet was given under the supervision of a dietitian. Speech therapists Kumari Vikaslata Lakra and Smt. Srishti Mahashabdhe provided therapy to relearn speech. Now the patient is completely healthy and able to speak. This operation costs five to six lakhs in a private hospital. This facility is available at Raigarh Medical College, where the patient’s complete examination and treatment are done free of cost.
