The United States and South Korea have agreed to resume joint military drills early next month.

The announcement came even as US President Donald Trump has planned a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Pentagon said, the combined exercises are defence-oriented and there is no reason for Pyongyang to view them as a provocation.

It said the North Korean military had been notified about the schedule for the drills by the United Nations Command. The drills are expected to conclude by the end of May.
