Jordan’s foreign minister has warned the United States of dangerous consequences if it recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In a tweet, Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi said, he had told US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that such a declaration would trigger great anger in the Arab and Muslim world and jeopardise peace efforts.
Palestinian movement Hamas has also threatened a new “intifada” if the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel or moves its embassy to the disputed city.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is trying to rally international support to persuade Mr Trump not to make the announcement. His office said he made phone calls yesterday to world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Earlier Abbas has warned that American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would jeopardize the White House’s nascent Mideast peace efforts.
However, there is no response from the US State Department on the issue.
Israel is determined that East Jerusalem, occupied since the 1967 Middle East war be its eternal, indivisible capital. But Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future state.
