Govt announces another 30 cities under Smart City Mission

Government today announced the names of another 30 cities for development as smart cities under Smart City Mission. With this the total number of smart cities has gone up to 90.

Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has topped the list. Announcing the new batch of smart cities at a National Workshop on Urban Transformation, in New Delhi, Urban development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, 45 cities contested for 40 available smart city slots but only 30 were selected.

He said, there will be no compromise in selection of cities and quality of smart city plans. Mr Naidu said, 20 cities will be contesting for the remaining 10 slots under smart city mission.

The Minister informed that the 30 cities announced today proposed a total investment of 57 thousand 393 crore rupees under respective smart city plans. With this the total investment approved under the smart city plans of 90 cities has gone up to one lakh 91 thousand 155 crore rupees.

Mr Naidu said selection of cities for smart city development is running ahead of schedule and the remaining cities will submit revised smart city plans for filling up the vacant slots.
