The Congress Working Committee (CWC) today authorised party president Rahul Gandhi to forge an alliance with like-minded parties in the run up to 2019 Lok Sabha election.

Briefing media in New Delhi, senior leader Ashok Gehlot said, the decision was taken at a meeting of the newly-constituted CWC, where Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs and Congress Legislature Party, CLP, members from various states were present.

Party spokesman Randeep Surjewala said that the working committee unanimously authorised Mr. Gandhi to make pre and post poll alliance with any party keeping in view the ideology and interests of the Congress party.

Earlier, addressing the CWC meeting, Party President Rahul Gandhi asked the CWC to fight for the country’s oppressed.

He termed the new committee as an institution comprising experience and energy, and a bridge that joins the past, present and the future.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, doubling farmers’ income by 2022 will require an Agri Growth Rate of 14 per cent which is nowhere in sight.
Mr Gandhi had constituted the CWC last week. The new CWC includes 23 members, 18 permanent invitees and 10 special invitees. This is the first CWC formed by Mr Gandhi after assuming charge of the party.

The new CWC does not include senior party leaders like Digvijay Singh, Janardan Dwivedi, Kamal Nath, Sushilkumar Shinde, Mohan Prakash and CP Joshi.

The BJP flayed the Congress for its negative politics and said that the party has virtually decided to turn itself into a suicide bomber with the sole aim of stopping Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his development agenda.

Reacting to the Congress Working Committee decisions, BJP spokesman Sambit Patra said that the Congress is ready to reduce itself to a regional party to stop Mr Modi.
