Telangana Government to increase quota for Muslims, STs in state


Telangana Government has decided to increase the reservations to backward Muslim population and Scheduled Tribes in the state. State Cabinet that met in Hyderabad last evening has approved raising quota quota to socially and economically backward Muslim population who will be referred as BC-E in the state, besides raising the existing 7.5 per cent quota of the STs to 12 per cent in line with their population.

Announcing the cabinet decisions, Chief Minister Chandrasekhara Rao said the cabinet will meet again on 15th of this month to determine the percentage of quota to BC-E and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has been requested to convene a special session to consider the proposed New Telangana Reservation Act.

Presently the BC-E category enjoys 4 per cent quota in education and employment in the state. the Chief Minister further said the new legislation will ensure reservations beyond 50 per cent in the state in line with Tamil Nadu. Increasing quota to BC-E and STs was a poll promise of the Telangana Rastra Samithi.
