
A police inspector from Tamil Nadu has been shot dead by a suspected burglar in Rajasthan while trying to nab him.
The victim was part of a team of seven policemen formed to investigate a case of robbery of about 3.5-kilogram gold from a jewellery shop in Kolathur, Chennai last month.
On a tip off, the team rushed to Jaitaran in Pali district of Rajasthan last week. They nabbed the main suspect named Nathuram this morning, who however is said to have suddenly opened fire and escaped.
The 48-year old police official Periyapandian lost his life on the spot and four other policemen sustained injuries. Periyapandian’s body was sent to a hospital in Jodhpur for autopsy.
Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy has announced Rs 1 crore solatium to the family of the victim. He has assured that the educational expenses of his two children will be borne by the state government.
He has also announced Rs 1 lakh each to those who sustained injuries in the incident and that their medical expenses will be borne by the Government.
The Rajasthan police have assured all help to their Tamil Nadu counterparts in their investigation and to arrest the guilty.
