Social media like Facebook and Whatsapp are getting popular with the farmers. Interestingly, it is because of the portals, mobile applications and call centres developed by Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes and Government Departments for dissemination of information among the farming sector people. The information was given by MS Yadava, Dean, Agriculture of Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) at the inaugural ceremony of five-day online training programme on ‘ICT and Mass Media in Agricultural Extension’ on Tuesday.
It is jointly organized by BAU and Hyderabad based organization MANAGE.

He quoted that any agricultural university has three mandates focusing on teaching, research and extension education. ICT has already made entry into the mandated activities of agricultural universities. The websites and portals are full of educational contents and research publications and we call these online resources as “Cyberary”.

ICT has become so important for the university that we have to make separate budget provision for development and maintenance of infrastructure and services. He said BAU has adopted ICT in a big way. Besides IT infrastructure, the university has developed smart and virtual classrooms. Educational contents created by teachers are being uploaded on Youtube. Admission, registration and examination processes have been made online. The University has implemented a number of ICT projects and developed a number of products and services for the benefit of stakeholders as well as also organized a number of seminars and workshops on ICT related topics.

Notably, the present training programme is in continuity of the institution’s efforts towards promotion of ICT in the field of agriculture. He congratulated BK Jha and the entire team of scientists of Department of Agricultural Extension and Communication , Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and Bhaskar Gujji of MANAGE, Hyderabad for organizing the event.

The programme aims at sensitization, motivation and development of analytical skills of participants so that they could develop plans and projects and enhance their working efficiency. He expressed satisfaction over the variety of participants and quality of resource persons.
