The Delhi High Court took note of a recent National Green Tribunal’s order banning all protests and dharnas around the historic Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and said there was no need for further consideration on the order.

A bench of acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar disposed of a Public Interest Litigation seeking direction to prohibit holding of demonstrations by various groups and others and also restraining them from shouting slogans, distributing pamphlets and littering at Jantar Mantar road.

The bench said, in view of the recent NGT’s order prohibiting protests at the Jantar Mantar, the prayer raised in the writ petition stands satisfied and now no further order is required. On 5th of October, the NGT had banned all protests and dharnas around the Jantar Mantar area by saying that such activities violate environmental laws. Jantar Mantar has been a hotspot of many agitations over the past decades.
