The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has planned to implement the ‘battery waste free’ scheme by roping in students of city schools and colleges.

BMC officials from the solid waste management department said that batteries of domestic electronic goods are dumped in house dustbins. Later this electric waste is transported to city dumping grounds, which leads to the pollution.

Under the scheme, the batteries will be disposed off in an eco-friendly manner as mandated by the Domestic Hazardous Waste Management Rules.

BMC will set up e-waste collection centres in 24 wards. He said that an e-waste collection centre was set up near Mithibai College, Vile Parle and this centre facilitates collection and disposal of e-waste in an environment-friendly manner.
