
In flood hit Assam, situation further worsened today as new areas have been inundated. Breach of Hatimura embankment in Nagaon district has submerged at least 30 villages. People have moved to higher places. Sources said, army has been deployed at Nagaon and Kokrajhar district. Assam Water Resource minister Keshab Mahanta who had to cancel his Majuli visit due to worsening flood situation at Koliabor in Nagaon district, has visited affected areas. Flood water overtopped national highways at Nagaon district hampering vehicle movement. Flood water also inundated new areas in Darrang district. Road communication has been snapped at many places due to flood.
Meanwhile, death toll due to flood has gone up to 12. Rescue and relief measures are being carried out on a war footing. Sources said, 12 lakh people are reeling under the fury of flood at 21 districts. Flood water has inundated huge crop land, schools, colleges and hospitals. 63 thousand displaced people have taken shelter at 137 relief camps. Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Dhubri are among the worst affected districts. Several ministers are visiting flood affected districts to take stock of the situation. NDRF, SDRF and local administration are carrying out rescue and relief operation. Flood water has also inundated several wildlife parks including the Kaziranga national park.
