
India’s top-ranked singles player, Yuki Bhambri crashed out of the Maharashtra Open Tennis tournament following a three-set defeat against eighth seed Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in Pune today.
Bhambri, ranked 118, squandered away six break chances in the deciding set to bow out with a 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 defeat against Herbert, ranked 81, in the second round of the hard court ATP 250 event.
Sumit Nagal’s ATP World Tour debut ended yesterday when he lost to Belarusian Ilya Ivashka in straight sets 3-6, 3-6. India’s singles challenge is still alive with wild card Ramkumar Ramanathan up against top seed and world number six Marin Cilic, later in the evening.
In the men’s doubles event, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Rohan Bopanna progressed to the quarterfinals yesterday after they knocked out their unseeded Indian rivals Leander Paes and Purav Raja 6-3, 6-2.
