Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu spearheaded home challenge in the 7th edition of India Open Super Series Badminton Tournament 2017 which started in New Delhi today. Saina who is winner of the title in 2015, beat Chinese Taipei’s Chia Hsin Li 21-10, 21-17 to reach the second round in women’s singles.
Olympic Silver Medallist P.V.Sindhu also reached the second round in women’s single, beating her compatriat Arundhati Pantwane 21-17, 21-6. In other matches, the pair of Prannav Jerry Chopa and N.Sikki Reddy beat Hafiz Faizal and Shella Devi Aulia of Indonesia 21-15, 21-19 in the first round of mixed doubles.
In men’s singles , Sai Praneeth, Sameer Verma and his brother Saurabh Verma cleared the first round. Praneeth beat Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto 16-21, 21-12, 21-19. Sameer beat Son Won Ho of South Korea 21-17, 21-10 and Saurabh beat his compatriat H.S.Prannoy 21-13, 21-16. Some top ranked badminton players from around the world will fight it out over a period of 5 days in the national capital for the top prizes in respective categories.
