Angelique Kerber created history by defeating 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams last night to lift her first Wimbledon 2018 title.
In a Women’s Singles summit clash, the 11th seeded German defeated Serena, a seven-time winner, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to add to her 2016 Australian Open and US Open trophies. With the win, Kerber has become the first German woman to win the title since Steffi Graf in 1996. Serena was bidding a record-equaling 24th major trophy.
Meanwhile, the Men’s Singles Final between three-time winner Novak Djokovic and Kevin Anderson will be played today. Djokovic has 12 Grand Slam titles to his name, so far, but has struggled for form and fitness since winning the French Open in 2016. Anderson will be eying his first Slam after losing to Rafael Nadal in the Final of the US Open last year.
