UP: Voting underway for first phase of Urban Local Bodies elections


In Uttar Pradesh, voting for first phase of three-phase Urban Local Bodies elections is being held in 24 districts today.

The polling started at 7:30 this morning and it will come to end 5 in the evening. As many as 230 local bodies including municipal corporations of Meerut, Agra, Kanpur, Faizabad and Gorakhpur, 71 Nagar Palika Parishad and 154 Nagar Panchayats will go for polls under this phase. A total of 26,356 candidates including 10,317 women are in the fray. Eleven thousand six hundred eighty-three polling booths have been set up for about one crore voters.

District Election Officers have declared a holiday in poll-bound districts in view of today’s voting.

As per information received, elaborate security arrangements have been made for smooth conduct of the poll.

Drone cameras have been deployed at hypersensitive polling stations and arrangements have been made at about 10 percent polling booths for a live webcast of voting.

All major political parties of the state including ruling BJP, main opposition Samajwadi Party, BSP and Congress have fielded their nominees for the polls.

Meanwhile campaigning for the second and third phase of elections have intensified. BJP leader and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will address a rally today at Allahabad district. BJP State Unit President Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey will campaign in Varanasi.
