The newly implemented Shops and Establishments Act by the Chhattisgarh Government has received widespread support from the business community and citizens. This landmark decision is expected to enhance employment opportunities, facilitate smooth business operations, and significantly strengthen the state’s economic growth. Notably, the removal of time restrictions on shop operations will provide greater flexibility to businesses and better services to consumers. However, this Act does not apply to liquor shops.

Accelerating Business and Employment Opportunities
This decision marks a revolutionary step in promoting Ease of Doing Business. The new regulations simplify the registration process, provide relief to small shopkeepers, and ensure better protection of employees’ rights.

Shops already registered under previous regulations must apply for a Labor Identification Number (LIN) within six months, without any additional fees. However, if applied after six months, a mandatory fee will be charged as per the rules.

Freedom to Operate Shops 24/7, All Week
Under the new Act, businesses are now free to operate their shops 24 hours a day, seven days a week, entirely at their discretion. This liberalized approach is expected to boost business activities, generate employment, and strengthen the state’s economy.

Previously, shops were required to remain closed one day a week, but this restriction has now been removed. However, the government has mandated that employees must receive a weekly day off and no employee should work more than 8 hours per day.

Protecting Workers’ Rights is a Priority
While granting business freedom, the government has also ensured strong protection of workers’ rights. Shop owners must comply with all labor welfare provisions, including:

Mandatory weekly leave for employees
Strict adherence to an 8-hour work limit per day
Implementation of labor welfare schemes
A Strong Step Towards Economic Empowerment
The new Shops and Establishments Act is a progressive step that aims to expand the state’s economic activities, granting greater freedom and convenience to business owners. Its effective implementation will not only boost business operations in Chhattisgarh but also increase state revenue.

This initiative by the Chhattisgarh Government is not just a major reform for trade and industry but also lays the foundation for a strong and inclusive economic system.
