Health, education and research form the core foundation of any developed society. As India moves swiftly towards the national goal of a developed nation by 2047, “high-quality and inclusive healthcare” has become a central priority. In this direction, the Medicity project, being developed by the Chhattisgarh Government in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, marks the beginning of a “new era of advanced medical services” not only for the state but for the entire Central Indian region. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai and the guidance of Finance Minister Shri O.P. Choudhary, the project is emerging as one of the country’s “most ambitious and future-ready healthcare initiatives”.
Nava Raipur Atal Nagar has long been a major centre for education, transport, industry and modern urban development. Medicity is now set to position itself as a national “healthcare capital”. With its robust connectivity, strong transportation network, and strategic central location, Nava Raipur is becoming the preferred destination for advanced medical care for neighbouring states, including Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. More than seven crore passengers use the airport and rail facilities annually, and with upcoming international flight services, “medical tourism opportunities” are expected to expand significantly.
Spread across 200 acres in Sectors 36–37, Medicity will house more than 5,000 beds along with leading national healthcare institutions, establishing it as one of India’s largest medical cities.
A medical university, nursing college and research centres are being set up to build a “competent new generation of medical professionals”. Specialised hospitals in cardiology, cancer sciences, neurology, orthopaedics, organ transplant and multispecialty care, along with state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratories, will elevate healthcare standards. Residential complexes, hostels, hotels and dharamshalas planned for patients and attendants will shape the area into a “human-centric medical zone”. Under the ‘walk-to-hospital’ model, eco-friendly design, seamless public transport and affordable treatment under PMJAY and CGHS will make the project fully inclusive.
Existing world-class institutions in Nava Raipur further strengthen this ecosystem. Shri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, operational since 2012, is a renowned centre for paediatric cardiac care, serving patients from India, as well as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and several African countries. The 170-bed Balco Cancer Hospital, functional since 2018, provides advanced cancer treatment across a radius of nearly 600 km in Central India. Raipur’s clean environment and lower cost of living make it a more suitable destination for patients and their families.
Medicity will not only be a healthcare project but also a major centre of economic activity. It will generate thousands of jobs in health, pharma, wellness and support services. The development of affordable housing, commercial establishments and new service sectors around it will make a significant contribution to the state’s GDP.
Nava Raipur Medicity reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring “high-quality healthcare for all, at low cost and with strong safety standards”. More than a project, it represents a “new definition of India’s healthy, secure and developed future”. In the coming years, Medicity will reshape the healthcare landscape of Central India and serve as a model of excellence at the national and international levels.
“Nava Raipur Medicity will become an engine of economic and social progress for Chhattisgarh, driving growth for decades. This world-class healthcare city, spanning 200 acres, will strengthen the state’s economy by generating significant employment opportunities in the health, pharmaceutical, wellness, education, and service sectors. With AIIMS, Bombay Hospital Trust, a medical university and super-speciality institutions, Nava Raipur will emerge as a national health hub. Its model—based on ‘accessibility, affordability and high quality’—will position Chhattisgarh as a leader in medical tourism, research and the health economy.” — Finance Minister Shri O.P. Choudhary
Medicity in Nava Raipur is the beginning of a healthcare revolution in Central India. This integrated healthcare city will provide advanced, accessible, and affordable medical services to the people of Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states, including Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. By bringing medical services, education, research and medical tourism together, Medicity will become a strong pillar of India’s developed future.” — Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai
