Raised issues of backward communities and minorities since pre Independence era: Congress

Congress today said, it has raised issues of backward communities and minorities since the pre Independence era. Briefing media in New Delhi, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act came into being in 1989 under former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership.

Mr Azad said, atrocities are still committed against Dalits in spite of this law. He said, if the Supreme Court ruling on the Act is not reviewed, Dalits will be treated how they were treated pre Independence. The Congress leader said today’s Bharat Bandh is against government’s silence regarding the issue. He however said, Congress party does not support violence of any kind.
