Opposition presidential candidate Meira Kumar will file her nominations today in the presence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and a number of opposition leaders at Parliament House.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs Kumar is the opposition nominee against NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind. She will file her papers at 11:30 AM before the Lok Sabha Secretary General who is the returning officer for the 17th July presidential election.
Today is the last date of filing of nomination papers for the election. Senior leaders from the opposition parties including Congress, CPI(M), RJD and BSP are likely to remain present on the occasion.
Earlier yesterday, briefing reporters in New Delhi, Mrs Kumar said she will contest the election on the basis of ideology and not caste. She rejected the perception that this Presidential election is Dalit versus Dalit.
She said she was selected unanimously by 17 major political opposition parties to be their candidate in Presidential election.
Ms Kumar said the unity and coming together of these political parties is based on their shared democratic values, inclusiveness, social justice, freedom of press, and transparency. She said two days ago, she wrote letters to all members of collegiums requesting them for their support.
