President says, incidents like Kathua happening in any part of the country is shameful


President Ram Nath Kovind today emphasised on upholding of moral and human values in the society and said that some recent incidents of crime against minor girls and women in the country are a matter of serious concern.

Addressing the sixth convocation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University at Katra, Jammu today, the President said that after 70 years of independence incident like Kathua, occurring in any part of the country is shameful.

He said it is society’s responsibility to ensure such incidents do not occur to any girl or woman in the country. Mr Kovind said it is the responsibility of every citizen to inculcate the sense of moral character in the society. He added that society has to assure that all types of crime against girls and women are curbed and education can play an important role in achieving this goal.

The President appreciated the girl students for outshining the boys in the academics at the University. On the occasion, the President presented degrees and medals to 70 students from different streams.

Speaking about India’s success in recently concluded Commonwealth games at Goldcoast, Mr Kovind said, daughters of India have brought laurels to the country. The President is on a two-day visit to Jammu and is scheduled to visit Vaishno Devi Shrine tomorrow.
