Modi to leave on two-day visit to Sri Lanka to attend Vesak Day celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach Sri Lanka on a two-day visit this evening. This will be the second visit of Narendra Modi after his last visit to island nation in March, 2015.

On arrival, he will be visiting the Seema Malaka at the Gangaramayya temple where he will take part in the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony along with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime minister Ranil Wickremsinghe. He will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of 14th UN Vesak celebrations beginning in Colombo tomorrow.

More than 400 Buddhist delegates from over 100 countries will be participating in the international conference focused on ‘Social Justice and Sustainable Peace’. This is the first time that Sri Lanka is hosting the UN Vesak day celebrations. People expressed happiness over Prime Minister’s participation in Buddhist celebrations acknowledging that both countries share a common heritage.

Prime minister will be interacting with the Sri Lankan leaders and address a gathering of Indian Tamils in Norwood of Nuwara Eliya district tomorrow. He will also be inaugurating a base hospital in the same province which has been built with Indian grant. Prime minister will be vesting the biggest Buddhist temple in Kandy before his departure tomorrow evening.
