Opposition parties meet underway to evolve strategy for V Presidential elections

The meeting of Opposition parties to evolve a strategy for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections is underway in New Delhi. The meeting has been convened by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, BSP leader Satish Mishra, RLD leader Ajit Singh, CPI (M) general secy Sitaram Yechury, CPI general secy Sudhakar Reddy, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, NCP leader Praful Patel and Tariq Anwar, SP leader Naresh Agrawal are among those attending the meeting in Parliament. Before the meeting, the leaders observed silence over the terror attack on Amarnath Yatra pilgrims.

The process of filing of nominations for the vice presidential poll started on 4th of this month and will end on the 18th of July. The government and the opposition has so far not taken any names of possible candidates for the Vice President post.

The term of present incumbent Hamid Ansari, who has held the post for two successive spells, comes to an end on 10th of August.

The electoral college which votes for the vice president, consists of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The polling will take place on 5th of August and counting will be held on the same day.
