Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani today said India is a vibrant media industry which looks upon the digital world not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity. She was addressing the inaugural ceremony of 15th edition of the Asia Media Summit in New Delhi. The Minister said that India is poised to have over 969 million internet users in 2021. Ms Irani stressed that this is the time to put rules which ensure that not one player dominates the industry.

The minister also said, that in order to promote community radio stations, government has increased subsidy for setting up the station from 50 percent to 90 percent. She hoped that the summit concludes on a new pathway to strengthen media institutions.

The annual summit of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development, Kuala Lumpur, is being hosted by New Delhi for the first time. Representatives from nearly 40 countries will discuss issues related to the media sector. Theme of the summit is “Telling Our Stories – Asia and More”.
