The government has said there was over 2 lakh 40 thousand vacancies of non-gazetted staff in the Railways as on 1st of November 2017. This includes over one lakh 41 thousand vacancies in safety and over 98 thousand in other than safety categories.

Giving this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha yesterday, Railways and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said two employment notifications have been issued in February this year to fill up over 89,409 vacancies. This includes 26,502 vacancies of Assistant Loco Pilots and Technicians and 62,907 vacancies of various Level-One posts, mainly in safety categories.

The Minister also said manpower planning requires continuous review of sanctioned strength and filling up of vacancies on a continuous basis. He said in order to improve the competence of Railway employees regular training is imparted both at the time of recruitment as well as during service.
