New Delhi, April 2: Election Commission has rejected Aam Aadmi Party’s charges on EVM tampering and asked the party to introspect why it could not perform as per expectations in Punjab assembly polls. The EC said this in its reply to AAP’s request for verification of votes cast using EVMs in Punjab assembly elections using paper trail data.
The Commission reiterated that EVMs are not tamperable as an elaborate system of safeguards have been put in place. It said integrity of electoral process is fully preserved.
The EC also said ECI-EVMs are fundamentally different from the voting machines adopted in other countries. It said comparisons with other countries who have stopped using EVMs are misguided as systems used in other countries are computer based and controlled with internet connectivity and hence could be hacked.
The Commission also clarified that Supreme Court had never cast any aspersion that election process is rigged by use of EVMs and strongly objected to wrong extrapolation of Supreme Court’s order.
