The Supreme Court has slapped a fine of 70 lakh rupees each on two doctors for helping a Haryana legislator evade arrest for 527 days against whom a non-bailable had been issued in a murder case. The court held the doctors of a private hospital in Gurgaon, guilty for allowing former INLD legislator Balbir Singh a stay in the hospital without any justifiable reason.
The bench, comprising Justices Dipak Misra, A M Khanwilkar and M M Shantanagoudar, passed the order, took a serious view of the conduct of Dr Munish Prabhakar and Dr K.S. Sachdev, the director and the managing director of the hospital respectively. Passing orders on contempt proceedings initiated against the doctors and Balbir Singh, the bench said that the money would be utilised for providing medical assistance to the under privileged.
