India is leading in getting GI tag for Handloom & handicrafts: Smriti Irani

Union Minister for textile and information and broadcasting Smriti Irani has said that India is leading in getting geographical indication (GI) tag for Handloom and handicrafts. Addressing the weavers at Ahmedabad Haat on National Handloom day, she said that this will help weavers to get more price for its value addition. She appealed to the weavers to take maximum benefits of programmes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mrs. Irani also asked weavers to use weavers Help line number to solve their all doubts.
As per information received, Directorate of Field Publicity has organized special outreach programs on National Handloom Day today. The first such program has been organized at Central University of Gujarat at Gandhinagar this morning to highlight the programmes of Ministry of Textile and Good Governance.
The second program to mark the National Handloom day will be held at Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad IIMA tomorrow. Quiz, talks with weavers and experts and ‘weavathon’, the event of design competition have been organized on this occasion.
On this occasion, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani has appealed to support the weavers by promoting India’s diverse handloom sector and adopting it in their day to day lives. In a tweet message, Ms. Irani said Indian handloom traditions, which have been continuing since ages showcases country’s culture and unity in diversity very beautifully.
