Central team led by Kiren Rijiju arrives in Assam to take stock of flood situation

A central team led by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju arrived in Lakhimpur this morning to take stock of flood situation in Assam.

The team included members from the Home Ministry, National Disaster Management Authority, NITI Aayog and National Disaster Response Force.

Mr. Rijiju along with Assam Water Resources minister Keshab Mahanta and Sports minister Naba Doley held discussion with Lakhimpur district officials at Lilabari airport in Lakhimpur.

Over two lakh people have been affected in one of the worst hit Lakhimpur district. Mr. Rijiju also visited a relief camp at Lakhimpur. Later, they will visit Dhemaji and Majuli districts.

Meanwhile, Morigaon district administration has evacuated people from some low lying villages as a precautionary measure as the surging water of the Brahmaputra is likely to breach river embankment at Lahorighat. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed at Morigaon and the army has been kept in stand by. On the other hand, the situation at Majuli district slightly improved today.

Official sources from Majuli said that water level has started declining. Flood has affected over 17 lakh people in 24 districts of the state.
