A war of words has broken out between the United Nations and the DR Congo government over a donor conference in Geneva to raise 1.7 billion US dollar to tackle a humanitarian crisis.
United Nations has declared the humanitarian crisis in the DR Congo to be a Level 3, the UN’s highest-level emergency. Prime Minister Jose Makila said the UN, aid bodies and NGOs in the country are propagating a bad image of Democratic Republic of Congo.
He said Congo will not participate in the Geneva conference” on April 13. Makila said while he recognise that the country is facing an emergency situation but the activation of the top-level humanitarian emergency will act as a brake for development and discourage investors.
At least 13.1 million people are in need of humanitarian aid, the UN Security Council said on Thursday.
