Indo-Sri Lanka Hindi conference organized at Kelaniya University near Colombo

An Indo-Sri Lanka Hindi conference was organized at Kelaniya University near Colombo on eve of Hindi Divas celebrations on Wednesday.

The theme of conference was ‘Hindi E-learning : Identity and possibilities’ and various scholars including one from India shared their thoughts on the subject. High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Shri Taranjit Singh Sandhu was the chief guest on the occasion.

Mr. Sandhu in his speech extended his support from promotion of Hindi in the country saying that Indian government has been regularly funding Sri Lankan students by providing them scholarships.

He said that Indian national constitute for largest number of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka and it has been proposed to impart Hindi training to local workers to better serve the tourists.

Kelaniya University is distinct as it has a full-fledged Hindi department which offers courses ranging from degree to doctorate and research.

Hindi is quite popular among Sri Lankan youths and many of them are enrolled for special Hindi classes offered by Indian Cultural centre in Colombo.
