As many as seven soldiers, including an officer, were killed in clashes with terrorists in recent operations in restive northern Sinai Peninsula of Egypt.

The Military said in a statement that forces have killed at least 59 suspected terrorists and arrested another 142 suspected terrorists and criminals.

It said, air strikes destroyed 56 vehicles containing weapons and ammunition in the Western Desert, south and northeastern border areas. No time-frame was given for these recent operations.

Egypt launched a nationwide operation against terrorists last year. It has struggled to defeat a long-running insurgency in Sinai, which serves as a base for Egypt’s Islamic State affiliate.
