In Bangladesh, the Supreme Court today stayed a High Court order that granted bail to former Prime Minister and opposition BNP Chief Khaleda Zia in a corruption case.
The 72-year old BNP Chief was sentenced to five years in jail last month in connection with the embezzlement of around 250,000 US dollars in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust.
Last week, the High Court had granted her a four-month interim bail. The Anti-Corruption Commission and the state had, then, filed two leave-to-appeal petitions before the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s order.
