
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged all states to intensify their efforts in pursuit of a nuclear weapons free world. He said this in a message delivered on his behalf at an annual memorial to mark the 72nd anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing in Hiroshima, Japan.The UN chief said the states possessing nuclear weapons have a special responsibility to undertake concrete steps regarding the nuclear disarmament.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people gathered yesterday in Hiroshima to mark the 72nd anniversary since the US detonated an atomic bomb over the city in 1945. Officials placed a list of 308,725 victims in a cenotaph. It includes the names of 5,530 people who died or were confirmed to have died in the past year.
