History Created with Over 9,800 Runners; Bastar Shines on the Global Stage

The historical and natural landscape of Bastar bore witness to a glorious moment as an unprecedented wave of enthusiasm swept through the ‘Bastar Heritage Marathon 2026’, setting a new record with over 9,800 registered runners. This event emerged not just as a sports competition, but as a living symbol of Bastar’s transforming identity, growing peace, and the success of rehabilitation policies like the government’s ‘Poona Margom’ (New Path).
A Milestone for Peace and Development
Speaking at the closing ceremony held near the Chitrakote Waterfalls after the marathon commenced from Lalbagh in Jagdalpur, Forest Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap congratulated the winners. He stated, “The Bastar Heritage Marathon 2026 will prove to be a milestone in our efforts to create a prosperous and developed Bastar. Bastar is changing; a region that remained restless for four decades is now becoming a fortress of peace. Our youth are succeeding not only in sports but also in the country’s prestigious competitive exams.”
He noted that players from various states, overseas, and across the Bastar division participated in this atmosphere of tranquility. He lauded the district administration for the successful execution and expressed hope for even grander events in the future.
New Chapters of Growth
MLA Shri Kiran Singh Deo remarked that following the Abujhmad Half Marathon, this event marks a new chapter of peace, progress, and prosperity. Bastar MP Shri Mahesh Kashyap and MLA Shri Vinayak Goyal also addressed the gathering, extending their best wishes to the champions.
From Lalbagh to ‘India’s Niagara’
The highlight of the event was the 42 km Full Marathon, which kicked off from the historic Lalbagh Ground in Jagdalpur and concluded at the banks of the world-famous Chitrakote Waterfalls, often called the ‘Niagara of India’. To ensure inclusivity, the marathon was divided into four categories:
* 42 km: Lalbagh to Chitrakote
* 21 km: Up to Potanar
* 10 km: Up to Kumhrawand
* 5 km (Fun Run): From Lalbagh to Dalpat Sagar (Ranighat), seeing participation from children to senior citizens.
Rewards and Inclusivity
To encourage sporting talent, the administration announced an attractive prize pool of ₹25 lakh.
* Bastar Category: A special provision was made to allow local runners to compete alongside international-level athletes.
* Free Registration: Entry was completely free for residents of the Bastar district.
* Social Harmony: A notable highlight was the enthusiastic participation of the Manjhi-Chalki community, further strengthening the social fabric of the event.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including District Panchayat President Smt. Vedvati Kashyap, Mayor Shri Sanjay Pandey, Commissioner Shri Doman Singh, IG Shri Sundarraj P., and Collector Shri Akash Chhikara, among others. This grand event successfully showcased a new picture of Bastar’s rich culture, peace, and development to the world.
