Make cancer treatment affordable: Vice President

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has stressed on a need to create awareness on the dangers of pollution, obesity, harmful use of tobacco, betel nut, alcohol and sedentary lifestyle linked to cancer.

Speaking after inaugurating the State Cancer Institute Block in Kidwai Cancer Institute in Bengaluru today, he said, due to lack of awareness in people only 12.5 per cent of around 30 lakh cancer patients in India reach the hospital at an early stage of the disease.

Mr. Naidu also underscored the importance of screening people periodically to detect the disease at an early stage.

The government, he stressed, should explore various policy alternatives to make cancer treatment affordable.

He said, Cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care units have to be established in rural areas where 70 per cent of the population resides.

The Vice President also dedicated to the nation, the Radiotherapy facilities and robotic surgery equipment on this occasion.
