Veteran filmmaker Muzaffar Ali says that regional cinema is creating identity for India

Veteran filmmaker Muzaffar Ali has said that regional cinema is creating an identity for India. He was speaking at a press conference as a part of the international jury of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) this morning.

Talking about regional cinema, he said creating a story is about understanding each other’s culture. Another member of the jury, filmmaker Roger Christian asked young filmmakers to find a story from their own culture for cinematography. Christian stressed that story should be at the centre of filmmaking. He informed that a documentary on the production of the Star Wars series is in the pipeline.

A panel discussion on digital space was also held at Kala Academy. Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur said digital space is undercutting the idea of gatekeepers. Technology is moving very fast and independent filmmakers have used cinema as a model of rebellion.Another panelist Vijay Subramaniam, director, content, Amazon Prime Video India, said, this is a good time to make cinema due to availability of technology and data space.

Speaking at the session, Nachiket Pantvaidya, CEO, Alt Digital -Balaji Telefilms Ltd, said, the digital medium provides a way for home delivery of cinema. He added that there is a huge need for digital content in India. Three Hindi movies – Pihu, Newton and Chutney are being screened today at the IFFI.
