Building Dreams : Baratu’s Story of Hope with PMAY-G

In the financial year 2022-23, Baratu, son of Rangu, a Scheduled Caste resident of Gram Panchayat Kharsura, under Janpad Panchayat Surajpur, benefitted immensely from multiple government schemes. As part of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G), Baratu received ₹1.2 lakhs in four installments to construct a pucca house, marking a significant improvement from his previous kachcha house. The transformation from a fragile, temporary structure to a durable and secure home brought safety and comfort to his family.
Alongside this, Baratu also received 90 days of wage employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), specifically for labour towards building his house. This additional support not only aided in completing the construction but also provided a crucial source of income, improving the family’s economic condition.
As part of a convergence with the PMAY-G scheme, Baratu’s household received additional benefits under various other government programs. They were provided a toilet facility under the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G), ensuring improved sanitation and hygiene. The family also received a gas connection through the Ujjwala scheme, allowing them to switch to cleaner cooking methods and reducing health hazards associated with traditional fuels.
Moreover, they gained access to electricity, bringing light and modern conveniences into their home for the first time. A tap water connection ensured a reliable supply of clean drinking water, further enhancing their quality of life.
To promote financial and social empowerment, Baratu’s family was also encouraged to join a Self-Help Group (SHG). This opened doors for collective economic opportunities and community participation, offering a pathway toward greater self-sufficiency. The combination of these benefits has significantly improved the living standards of Baratu’s family, ensuring a better, healthier, and more secure future.
