Ambedkar Hospital Doctors Create History, Remove 5-Kilogram Tumor Attached to Lung and Heart Patient discharged from hospital after recovering

Raipur, December 24

The Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery department of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital has achieved a major feat by removing a nearly five-kilogram mediastinal tumor attached to the lung and heart of a 52-year-old woman.

The surgery is significant because if the surgeon’s team had not carefully removed this cancerous tumor, there could have been a risk of injury to the body’s vital organs, the heart and lungs. Thanks to the skilled surgeon team at Ambedkar Hospital, the patient was discharged from the hospital after recovering from this complex surgery.

Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal has congratulated the Ambedkar Hospital management on successfully completing such a difficult surgery. He has said that very soon people will also get the facility of open heart surgery and coronary bypass surgery.

A 52-year-old woman arrived at Ambedkar Hospital with a complaint of difficulty in breathing. A CT scan and other tests revealed that the patient had a very large tumor inside her chest and attached to her heart. The patient’s condition was so bad that she could not breathe properly, so she was put on a high-pressure (BiPAP) ventilator. The tumor was so large that it had shifted the heart to another part by pressing on it and also compressed the lungs and trachea. Other institutions had refused to operate on the patient.

As planned, the tumor was successfully removed through the joint efforts of the team of cancer surgeon Dr. Ashutosh Gupta and heart and chest surgeon Dr. Krishnakant Sahu. During this operation, the heart-lung machine was also kept ready in standby mode because if the heart or pulmonary artery was injured for any reason, support would be available from the machine.
The tumor was about five kilograms. Later, on biopsy, it was found to be a malignant tumor called sarcoma, which is a very aggressive tumor. After recovery, the patient was sent to the cancer department for chemotherapy.
