Raipur, 25 September
Under the ambitious “Healthy Women, Empowered Families” campaign by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, special health sessions focusing on maternal safety were organized across Chhattisgarh. As part of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), over 40,000 pregnant women participated in sessions held at 843 government health institutions on 24th and 25th September. They were provided with free health check-ups, consultations, and treatment services.
This special campaign, based on the theme “Chhattisgarh’s Mother, Everyone’s Responsibility,” aims to reduce maternal mortality in the state and ensure timely identification and appropriate care for high-risk pregnancies. Operated by the state health department, the campaign not only strengthened access to healthcare services but also raised public awareness about maternal health, encouraging community participation.
The sessions included key health services such as hemoglobin testing, blood pressure measurement, weight check, blood tests, ultrasound, and nutritional counseling. During the campaign, over 10,000 women were identified as having ‘High-Risk Pregnancies’ and were placed under specialist supervision and continuous monitoring, enabling early treatment of potential complications.
Additionally, ultrasonography was performed for more than 6,000 women, aiding in the timely diagnosis and treatment of complications. These services proved particularly beneficial for women from remote and rural areas.
To monitor the program’s effectiveness, senior officials at the state and district levels conducted on-site inspections of 187 sessions. These inspections played a crucial role in ensuring service quality, procedural transparency, and actual delivery of care to beneficiaries.
Specialist Services Reached Every Primary Health Center in Bilaspur District
Under this campaign, Bilaspur district set a notable example in maternal healthcare. With support from the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), specialist medical services were extended to every primary health center in the district.
Chief Minister Mr. Vishnu Deo Sai stated:
“With the resolve of ‘Chhattisgarh’s Mother, Everyone’s Responsibility’, our government is giving top priority to maternal and child health. The screening of over 40,000 pregnant women and identification of more than 10,000 high-risk pregnancies in just two days under PMSMA is evidence that our healthcare services are reaching even remote areas. Reducing maternal mortality and ensuring safe motherhood for every sister is our commitment. It is not just a health issue, but the foundation for strong families and a prosperous society.”
Health Minister Mr. Shyam Bihari Jaiswal added:
“The wide-scale screenings, consultations, and treatments provided across the state under PMSMA reflect our government’s serious commitment to maternal health. The identification of over 10,000 high-risk pregnancies in just two days proves that timely screening and specialist services can significantly reduce maternal mortality.”
Primary Objective of the Campaign
The main aim of the campaign is to provide comprehensive check-ups, consultations, and treatment to pregnant women on time. Along with local doctors, specialist teams conducted tests for anemia, blood pressure, blood sugar, fetal health, and body weight. Information was also provided on antenatal care, nutrition, safe delivery, and newborn care. This initiative is expected to not only reduce maternal mortality but also make specialist services accessible to women in rural and remote areas for the first time.
The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan is usually held on the 9th and 24th of every month, but in view of the “Healthy Women, Empowered Families” campaign, the health department extended the sessions by an additional three days in September to ensure no pregnant woman is deprived of essential healthcare services.
